Conventional calcium and calcitriol supplementation normalises serum calcium but does not address all clinical challenges. Palopegteriparatide, a long-acting parathyroid hormone analogue, may offer improved outcomes but is not yet PBS subsidised in Australia.

Hypophosphataemia after iron therapy – a hidden risk

Hypophosphataemia, particularly after an iron infusion, is often missed because its symptoms closely mimic those of iron deficiency. In severe cases, it can cause osteomalacia, fractures or even respiratory failure. GPs play a key role in preventing and identifying at-risk patients.
